Cat Vaccinations

Which Vaccinations Do Felines Need?

There are two categories of cat vaccines - core and non-core. Core vaccines include:

●             Feline calicivirus (FCV) - a highly contagious upper respiratory infection.

●             Feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV1) - another virus resulting in an upper respiratory infection with several symptoms.

●             Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) - the infection can be transmitted in several ways by an infected feline. FeLV can be deadly.

●             Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV).

●             Rabies - a viral infection transmitted via bite wounds by an infected animal. Rabies is fatal.

Non-core vaccines are those that are given to kittens and cats based on their lifestyle. Ask a member of our team if any are recommended for your pet’s situation.

What to Expect at Our Animal Hospital

Whether you are bringing your kitty in for the first time or an annual pet wellness checkup, taking care of vaccinations is part of the examination.

During the examination, we will ask questions that will help the vet determine which vaccines are best suited for your feline. The vet will need your pet's age, overall health status, lifestyle (indoor, outdoor, or indoor/outdoor), and if he or she comes in contact with dogs or other cats.

The vet will also want to know if you board your cat, and if so, how often and if your cat accompanied you on vacation, and where you went.

Once the veterinarian has all the pertinent information, the appropriate vaccines will be recommended and administered upon approval by you. A plan for future vaccination updates will be provided.
